Here's an article from ESPN. FTA class of 1965, in the Aggie HoF

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46174873/davey-johnson-manger-86-world-champion-mets-dies-82

The above tribute doesn't say enough about what a good player he was. 3x AS, 4x GG, and his 1973 season is one of the least appreciated seasons of all-time. He hit 43 HR as a 2nd baseman, which stood as the single season record for 48 years until Marcus Semien broke it in 2021.

I was a Phillies fan all my life, being from there. In 1977, Davey played for us and always seemed to come up with a key hit when we needed it. I knew of him before he came to the Phils, but one day my dad calls me from back home and tells me there was an article about him in the Philly paper, and that he went to A&M. I never knew that.

In 1969, the Miracle Mets won their first World Series. Davey, playing 2nd Base for Baltimore, made the last out in that Series. He flied out to Cleon Jones in Left. The next time the Mets won the WS in 1986, Davey was their Manager.

In Dave's rookie year with Baltimore, 1966, the O's won the WS. In Dave's 7 seasons with the O's, he played in 4 World Series. Some guys can play a 15 year career and never sniff a World Series.

After the 72 season, Dave was traded to Atlanta. Hank Aaron noticed in Spring Training that Dave used a heavy bat, the same one he used in Baltimore. Aaron told him to use a lighter bat. That in the National League he was gonna see alot of good fastballs, and in that hot high Atlanta air, he would be surprised at how many balls would go out. The most Home Runs Dave ever hit in one season was 17, in 1972 with Baltimore. That 73 season, he hit 43. The 73 Braves might still be the only team with 3 players who hit 40 or more in one year. Dave-43, Darrell Evens-41, Hank Aaron-40.

Here.

This is an old post of mine, so rankings might have slightly changed:

A quick look at some stats:
1) 1,372 - 1,071 record (ranks 28th all-time with 20 of the 28 in the HOF)
2) .562 winning percentage (ranks 13th all-time, minimum 1000 games, with 11 in the HOF)
3) Twice voted Manager of the Year
4) Finished in the top 3 voting for Manager of the Year 7 times
5) Only 3 teams in 17 years finished with a losing record
6) WS ring with the 1986 Mets
7) 7 of his 12 teams (He managed 5 teams for less than 162 games) finished with 90+ wins with the 1994/1995 strike shortened seasons well on pace for 90+ wins
8) Reached the postseason 6 times; finished in 1st during the 1994 strike season (he managed 8 years when there were only 2 team per league making the playoffs).

He also had a knack for winning with mediocre teams. He took over the Mets in 1984 when they hadn't had a winning season in 7 years. Took over for the Orioles in 1996 when they hadn't made the playoffs since 1983, and took over for the Nationals who hadn't had a winning season since they were the Expos.

Sad day for Mets fans...of which I'm one.

Interesting bit of information...Of course, he led the Mets to their World Series victory over the Red Sox in 1986. However, as a player for the Orioles, he hit the fly ball in the 9th inning of game five of the 1969 World Series that was caught by Cleon Jones to secure the series for the Amazin' Mets.

The mid/late 80s Mets have to be considered on the list of "greatest teams that only won 1 title" list.

In 84 they won 90 gams and in 85 they won 98 and finished 2nd both times.
86 they won it all.
87 They won 92 and finished 2nd to St. Louis again.

In 88 they were 100-60 while the Dodgers were 94-67. The Mets won the East by 15 games and went 10-1 vs LA in the regular season, outscoring them 49-18.

They were up 2 games to 1 and up 4-2 headed to the 9th in Game 4, but Scioscia tied the game with a 2-run HR off Gooden and Kirk Gibson hit a solo shot in the 12th to put LA up 5-4 in the 12th.
In the bottom of the 12th, the Mets had the bases loaded with 1 out, but former Met Jesse Orosco popped up Strawberry and then they brought Orel Hershisher in to pop up Kevin McReynolds to end it.

The Mets salvaged Game 6 to get Game 7 in LA - But Hershisher was unstoppable - 5 hit shutout to send LA to the series.

In 89 - Gooden, Hernandez, Carter all got hurt and they still won 87 games.
In 90, they fired DJ after a 20-22 start and picked it up to finish 91-71 but finished behind the Cardinals again. That was Gooden's last good year, and Strawberry's last year in NY.

So from 84-90, they averaged 95 wins a year and had 2 division titles for it.
