I've been an advocate for players to make as much money for their marketable skills as the market will bear… For decades…

NIL is a good thing… The Transfer Portal, as it's currently configured is not… Together, they're a nuclear bomb waiting to go off…

I think it's time for honest reflection…
A great number of the elite D1 and P4 athletes are not students in anything resembling the traditional sense…

I'm ok with that, but let's be honest about it…

When money gets involved, EVERYTHING becomes a business… That requires contracts, rules, even laws… Both federal and state…

And they have to be obeyed, or there's a penalty…

Until athletes are held accountable, they (and the unscrupulous coaches and boosters) will continue to break the rules, tamper, and wreak havoc on CFB and MBB…

Whew, I feel better, already…

The game is irreversibly changed unfortunately. There can be some guardrails put into place as to number of transfers per player, contract lengths, budget caps etc. but it will not have the same look and feel as the game once was.

Ty Simpson was offered RIDICULOUS $$$ to transfer by several SEC teams and Miami AFTER he had declared for the NFL draft.

That is just obscene and also should be considered tampering as he never entered the xfer portal.

when the minor leagues/ college football pays more than the major leagues/ Nfl for a lot of players you know you have a system out of whack.

Money's always been involved, whether anyone wants to admit it or not.
Rule bending and tampering aren't new concepts either.

All we're talking about now is a shift in format, and how much of the same shenanigans get played under the table versus what's openly disclosed and discussed above board.

How is it obscene? Sounds like a free market for talent.

Except college football is not the minor leagues for the NFL. There is no direct affiliation between colleges and a particular NFL team like you have in baseball. NFL teams aren't developing a farm system. The folks writing the checks care about college football. They don't care about the NFL. They want their alma mater to be good at football. That's why you see such big dollar amounts being thrown around.

I am not a fan of the current model, but it's the world we live in. Anybody could have seen the direction this was going to go. It's not some big surprise. I don't blame the players for trying to maximize their earnings on their current profile while the opportunity is there. It likely won't be there forever. I don't know how, but if history is any indication, we are probably heading for some form of massive over correction. I don't know if that'll end up better or worse than the current version. I guess time will tell.

the last group to blame is the players.

What is the massive over correction going to be? The drying up of the settlement monies?

If people are worried about player movement, they must not be baseball fans. Those rosters go thru massive turnover every year, I don't see that changing even w/new scholarship rules.

It's not tampering. These players all have agents. Schools weren't calling Ty Simpson up on his cell phone.

It is 100% tampering. Contacting their family, coach or agent is tampering.

I think the only thing that really gets changed quickly would be the WHEN the transfer portal opens and closes. I think Saban had it put the best, it should be basically in line with the NFL scheduling. Coaches/players/fans shouldn't be pressured or hurt by the timeline.

The timeline causes issues with coaches being pressured to leave or engage with other employers for job openings and it lets players leave during playoff runs. Both of which cause those teams to suffer as a whole.

A lot of this though has to deal with a select few agents (Mostly agents of coaches ** Jimmy Sexton**) that create a lot of this chaos via hirings and media manipulation.

A "salary cap" would be nice so this thing doesn't get too out of control, but I would assume if it gets to that point we may as well end up with a league of 32 teams, 16 team playoff (like NFL), and a tiered league similar to that of the English Premier League and have promotion and relegation.

Also, if Team A has a player that wants to transfer and Team B "wins" that player then some portion of the transfer fee paid to the player must go back to Team A similar to European soccer.

I agree. College football is such a lucrative business, it's unethical for the players to not get paid. The transfer portal being as lax as it is is the problem. There was a coach recently that said he'd like if players only got to transfer once in their college careers, which I think would be a net positive.

I understand the sentiment from people longing to a return to the "student athlete" vibe of old, but that ship sailed a long time ago. The sport is simply too popular for that model to work.
