if yall would bother to read the article, you'd see why Kelly may likely choose to settle.

option 1: $54 million paid monthly through 2031, reduced by any amount he makes coaching elsewhere

option 2: $30 million paid in two payments (dates not stated in article)

there is a guaranteed number less than $54 million he will accept based on the time value of money and no need to mitigate.

Wondering if the option 1 reduction in pay only applies to coaching jobs, or could it also apply to any other earned income through employment - such as a TV gig?

If he really thinks he wants to coach again, then he should estimate what those earnings might be through 2031, take half of that and subtract from what LSU owes and demand that as a settlement. I would definitely take at least 1 year off - so probably not start a new coaching gig until 2027. If they trully offered him $30 mil, that sounds like a pretty good deal - considering possible future earnings and time value of money.

If he intends to retire, then demand the $54 mil. Maybe take slightly less if paid out immediately or over a shorter time frame.

First time I can say that I'm rooting for Brian Kelly. Whatever the worst option is for LSU, I hope he gets it

Take the 5 to 6 year monthly payments of $750k to $900k/mo and use a small part to buy a electronic billboard ad (preferably near Tiger Stadium) that shows the number of payments and total amount remaining to be paid. Rotate vacation photos in the background

He'll have a huge tax bill if he takes the lump sum, but there would be short-term certainty.

He's going to have a huge tax bill no matter what. But extending the payments will possibly put more of those payments in a lower tax bracket. Possibly. He may already be in the highest marginal bracket if he's invested wisely.

The most obvious solution is to retire and collect the $54 million to be paid through 2031. Could be the easiest decision anyone's ever had.

Or take a new job that pays you hardly anything now and the majority of the money after 2031. Then use LSU's money to boost your NIL pool.

What do you think LA State Police would do to that billboard operator?

He doesn't need to have invested wisely. The top marginal tax bracket for married couples is equivalent to his monthly payments. He's going to be well inside of it regardless of whether he takes a lump sum or not.

Unless LSU wants an extended hiring and rebuilding period, they just need to pay him and move on.

Does LSU not have any boosters than pay up the money in return get their name on some building or locker room. Sure if some booster paid enough they could get their name on the stadium
When you tear out a man's tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you're only telling the world that you fear what he might say.

I can see why he did it. He had a contract, and the things they promised him probably influenced his choice to leave ND.

LS & U should surrender and offer $54 million lump sum + 50k bonus, in cash with a strict stipulation he must come alone, at midnight to collect at a specific but unannounced unmapped location in the Atchafalaya Basin.

"Bryan Kelly, a coach you say...never heard of him." While you're here... would you like some fried alligator tail? Ahieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I don't think you follow… if this is his ONLY income, some will be taxed at lower marginal rates. If he has significant other income, for example, investment income, it's possible for the entire payment to be taxed at the higher tax rate. Every year.

This is going to get REALLY ugly…

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/46924174/brian-kelly-lawsuit-says-lsu-claims-not-formally-terminated-coach-now-seeking-fire-cause-avoid-buyout

lsu is grasping at straws to avoid the buyout….

" The suit does allege that LSU told Kelly's representatives on Monday that Woodward did not have "the authority to terminate Coach Kelly and/or make settlement offers to him" back in October and thus Kelly was never officially terminated."

That is preposterous at best, laughable really.

Kelly may not want to retire now….He's 64 years old….and only he knows how much passion and juice he has to stay in the head coaching world.
All that being said, the 30M is his best option with no deductions from LSU for "working elsewhere"….. with all the coaching vacancies out there he could land somewhere else for between nine and 10 million a year, coming out well over 54 million by 2031…..

I don't think a school would pay BK 10M a year.

I mean……would YOU?

I think LSU should offer BK a head coaching position at University of Pacific in lieu of the settlement.

Woodward ought to claim that lsu didn't "officially" fire him either and then offer Kelly a $200 million guaranteed money contract extension

After this fiasco, what high quality coach is gong to want to come coach (or stay) there? The school is quickly proving that the contracts they sign aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

I'd like to see some lawyers chime in, because this thing looks like it's going to court. But just a layman's view, Kelly looks like he should win.

IHMO, LSU is making a huge reputation mistake. If they don't have the money to pay him and another coach, they shouldn't have fired him.

I'd say the fact a lawsuit has been filed makes it definitely look like it's going to court.

As for who wins, if LSU does actually say he was fired for cause, it's impossible to say who will win until we know the facts behind the allegation

If they stay with "not for cause" Kelly will win in short order

You have to think there is no way this actually makes it to trial. Can you imagine what Scott Woodward would testify to about the LA governor in the last days of BK, especially after firing Scott and saying he didn't have authority to fire the football coach as the sitting AD?

LSU has ensured that no big name coach will touch this job with a 10 ft pole by attempting to fire Kelly for cause, when it's obvious from the timing that the firing was entirely performance related.

If they fire him for cause to avoid the buyout, they're going to have to hire a local high school coach to take over. What established coach would be willing to go to LSU after that?
BMX Bandit

Agree. For now, we just have Kelly saying "someone at LSU" said that. Remains to be seen if LSU actually make that claim.
