Does anyone have a solid contact in Admissions? My cousin is graduating HS this year, 4.1 GPA, 6 times she's been to aggie golf camp, etc etc. She is 100% maroon, somehow got deferred campus from A&M. She's going to be a longhorn if we cant fix this

Knowing someone in admissions will not help. Has she talked to an A&M counselor?
If she is not in the top 10% of her class then she is competing with all of the 4.0+ students especially if her SATs are relatively low. Has she been accepted to u.t.? If not I would suggest Blinn for the first year+ and then transfer to A&M.

I'm not familiar with deferred campus. Do you mean PSA? Or Blinn Team?

If she didn't get in to main campus at A&M then she isn't getting in to main campus at t.u.

She can still live in Aggieland and go to Blinn and if she does Blinn TEAM she can have lots of the same perks that A&M students have.

This isn't the end of the world. What are her test scores?

I'm not sure that trying to back door the process for someone who doesn't meet the qualifications is the best idea in the long run for anyone involved.

One of my daughter's friends got into tu but got PSA at A&M. Just saying it happens.

Blinn Team is a good alternative if your kiddo really wants to be an Aggie

Nothing wrong with Blinn. It's cheaper, too. Everything transfers.

When my son was a high school junior, we visited TAMU and the recruiting colonel for the Corps told a room full of kids and their parents that if they wanted to graduate from TAMU, they could. But the path might not be what they think it will be......Turns out he knew what he was talking about.

My son was a private school kid, and got a PSA offer from Texas A&M. He was devastated. Did. a year at Tarleton, and tbh it was the best thing for him. racked that 4.0, came to CSTAT, joined the Corps, and did fantastic. He graduated, found his wife, and is contracted into the the Marine Corps for September in Quantico. .....I would not change a thing.

Tell her to do whatever she has to do get to Aggieland. In the long run, it all evens out.

She's 100% maroon but is going to be a longhorn? That doesn't track. Not trying to be a jerk but if she wants it badly enough, there are plenty of other ways to get to A&M. It sucks she didn't get in outright, but she needs to fight for what she wants.

A&M had 91,000 applicants this year and admission decisions are all over the place. Like another poster said (and this was last year) I have a coworker who had a daughter get PSA at A&M and was admitted to UT. She wanted to be an Aggie so is completing her PSA year at Tarleton and will start at A&M in the fall. Thankfully she avoided the cesspool of Austin, but was tempted for a while.

I think sometimes the desired major can create a situation where you would be more likely to get into tu over a&m or the other way around.

Tarleton is a great option. Our younger went that option via PSA. Best thing that could have happened to her.

Navy had to set me straight for nine years before I could get into A&M. We all walk our own path.

Not sure how this is even possible. It's harder to get into tu than it is to get into A&M.

The days of "knowing someone in admissions" are long gone.

I may know of a local kid that got into A&M with a GED because of "knowing someone in admissions" in the early 90s.

I remember driving up before summer school in 1986 and filling out my application with my transcript and getting in as a "provisional" student for that summer school session and staying in the corps dorms! There is no way I'd be able to get in today! HAHA

Just like A&M, if you want to be a Longhorn (gasp) there is always a way.. (ACC)

Going to Blinn for a year or 2 is a great and cost saving option, huge cost savings btw...

It happens and is major dependent.

My daughter is an early engineering TAMU admit. Top 12% w/ just about every AP course she could take at one of the most academically competitive HS in the State. She applied tu Chem E and was denied.

A couple of her friends, who never took an AP course, were accepted to tu. One liberal arts and the other Kine. Both had applied to TAMU, but were offered PSA.

Seems non engineering at TAMU is more competitive than tu

Go to the best university that accepts you and never look back.

Not necessarily, or it may transfer as an elective. Former TAMU academic advisor. Blinn is a great route, but you need to work with an advisor at A&M in the major you want to transfer to BEFORE you register for classes at Blinn. While working at A&M, I advised Blinn and other community college students commonly on what to take (it was a science heavy major and we wanted to see solid coursework in particular sciences) and told them what grades they had to make. At that time, I was the one approving the student's admission to the major, and they were a shoe-in if they had followed the guidance.

I will caveat this in that I was working in a small major so it was easy to do that. Big major, that's going to be a lot harder. Business? Forget it.

Good nuance and caveats. Their transfer programs are top notch, I think they have the highest transfer rate in the state. Of course, dual enrollment programs are even better.

Also nothing wrong with staying home, if not in the B/CS area, and going to the CC there. All CC have the same classes and will most likely be cheaper. Blinn may be closer and have the "highest transfer rate" but they are one of the most expensive CC in the state last I looked. If you want to have the B/CS experience that is great but if you just want to get what you need to transfer it is ok to stay close to home and save some money. Just as has been said, talk to the advisors in the major to know what you need to do. They know what you need.

I read on r/tamuadmissions about someone who had a 36 ACT and 1500 SAT but got offered Blinn TEAM (probably outside top 10%). Applied for biochemistry and already got accepted to Purdue. I know engineering and biology are tough to get in but good lord, if a 36 ACT or 1500 SAT won't get you in, what will?!!! It is Reddit so who knows if it's true.

I don't know how knowing someone in admissions is going to help you. I have a friend who is close friends with a higher up in the admission office and he was told up front that they could not help get his daughter into A&M, she would have to get in on her own merits which she fortunately did.

No offense, but tens of thousands of people that applied to A&M can say the same thing. It is incredibly hard to get in to A&M these days, if she really wants to be an Aggie, she needs to take their offer.
