Good morning. I would love some recommendations for good seafood spots. Not to offend anyone, but not a fan of catfish. Thanks

Some suggestions with the usual YMMV caveat.

1. Kanji. They have more then sushi and have quite a few cooked options.

2. The Republic. Despite being known for steak they actually get in (or used) to good Gulf fish, shrimp, and crab. This would be under their 'composed entrees' on the menu.

3. Possibly Poches? I still haven't tried them.

My own experience is if you find a good restaurant they often have good seafood on the menu. By contrast the places here billing themselves as seafood places often just have the usual suspects: fried catfish, tilapia, salmon, etc.

Not really too many here. I'd say the options for a more or less dedicated seafood restaurant are Poche's, Fish Daddy, or Shipwreck.

Some of the higher end restaurants (Christopher's, for example) will have a few fish dishes on the menu at times that are probably better than anything you'll get at the above places.

Christopher's redfish is really good.

Personal opinion: Kanji's Miso Glazed Sea Bass is the best entree in town

Juicy Crawfish has other boiled seafood that's surprisingly good: crab, shrimp etc. at a decent price point

Casa Mangiare's seafood items are good.

Tbh I usually keep my eye open for the good stuff at HEB. Yeah it can be a crap shoot, but I've been super lucky with snapper, swordfish, haddock, and cod lately.

Marfa's has not disappointed me.

There isn't any good seafood here.

There is, but you have to look hard for it. It's why I cook seafood at home (that and I'm fussier about seafood then most foods).

This conversation has me now thinking of making a run to Beaumont, and the Seafood Lover. That place has the best options for at home cooking.

I've been buying H-E-B's rainbow trout, farmed in Idaho I think, either fresh or frozen, whichever one is on sale. In fact, the fresh is on sale through today for $6.97/lb.

Trout amandine is good and easy to make. I've been using America's Test Kitchen's recipe.

My go-to's are Katie's in Galveston and that place in Austin on Airline Blvd the name of which I can't remember. I need to check out H-Mart at some point. Always interested in suggestions.

Roses and Emery's then if you have time hit Tookies
or slip over to Kemah for Joe Lees

Fish Daddy isn't exceptional or anything but its a solid eating experience. Great appetizers, decent seafood, good portions, and an amazing bread pudding a la mode!

I will say it again...

Can we get a real seafood place that is not Cajun, and or feature Catfish? (Fish Daddy's does both)

We have so many Cajun places that they are going out of business. There are only so many coonasses in the Microplex.

I would settle for a Pappa's Seafood or a Landry's. If they put in a Pappadeaux, I would not complain, but they would get all my per capita Cajun budget.

Would die for whole scallops in the shell. Bought those a bazillion times when living in Europe on and off. Might see if I can bribe HEB to special order some.

***Disclaimer***
I am not a fried food person outside of shrimp, and I am super particular about fried shrimp, especially coconut.

That said we ate at Boston Sail Loft while in Beantown last August and wife and daughter got some sort of fried "sampler" for an appetizer, on that sampler was "fried scallops". Easily one of the best things I have ever eaten. First and only time I have seen fried scallops anywhere and they were show stoppers.

Lent is the time HEB ups its seafood ante. Gotta do some work to get the freshest but it's possible. Bought some really nice black drum (a severely underrated Gulf fish) to cut up for a curry.

FlyRod

I've only seen them in the shells in Europe and Asia. And only near coastal areas because the non muscle part is pretty perishable (and a lot of it is really gross looking).

Believe it or not but Wings n more on University has some really good fried shrimp. Flame away but it's really good. My Hubby likes their fish tacos… I've never tried them but he gets them regularly.
