I'm trying to refurbish an old fence line and have some three inch galvanized pipe I want to use. I've seen gasoline powered drivers in the rental market but have never used one. Thoughts?

If I was going to use something other than the old manual option, I'd rent one of the hydraulic ones for a skid steer or tractor.

Depends on your soil/ground type and the depth you want to drive the pipe. 3" pipe takes a pretty stout driver. I have rented the gasoline type and was very disappointed in what it would do.
I like my 3" or 4" pipe at minimum of 3.5-4 ft. (4' preferred) in the ground and in our clay/gravel soils the gasoline driver would not work.
Depending on how much you got to drive a hydraulic driver on a skid steer will be worth the rental.
Or you can old school it and drill holes with an auger and concrete the post in.

They work but they're heavy to lift on & off the posts. If you have access to a tractor with hydraulics or a skid steer, Id rent the one mentioned above.

If you attempt to drive galvanized pipe into the ground, it's going to rust, as you will peel off the galvanization in the driving process. Drill holes and set them in concrete.

If it were me I'd try to find a good Manuel driver. Along with a Sergio and a Pablo.

This thread reminds me of just how much I despise driving posts.

At least with t-posts and an extra hand I can use my front loader so it's tolerable. But that's the extent of it.

I use this for my fencing.

Now, where I am in the hill country, I'm drilling holes with a hammer drill before using this tool…and it's with t posts. For galvanized pipe and 3" stuff, like bracing and corners we just drilled a hole with a rock bit on a skid and set them in concrete.

But depending on where you are, you might not be "driving" anything.

I feel like the above tool handle pipe with the right end but you'll need to verify. Good tool and a good company. They always answer and hook me up with support when needed.

Good luck with the project anyway and enjoy the exercise.

Sergio and Pablo were deported by ICE. You're gonna have to make due on this one.

It won't hurt the galvanized pipe to be driven in. I've put steel pipe in the ground by driving for many years. Have never had one rust out.
They have a lot more danger of rusting through from water getting in from not being capped than rusting from the ground.

I buy pipe from the scrap yard as it becomes available so I just have a small batch to drive right now. Its sandy soil but when its dry its like concrete. We've had 10 inches of rain at my place in Bee County the last two weeks. I have a 100 horse tractor but no front end loader on it. Thanks for the info!

The do make 3 point drivers. Don't know about renting them, but our old landlord helped us fence some food plots.

I built a lot of fence after the hill country flood. These are life changing.

That's what every fence builder uses here in the Ozarks. I would have loved to have been able to use that at our ranch in Kimble County.......but had no choice...and finally broke down and bought a BEL-TEC. Its come in handy up here when they get somewhere they cant drive the post due to big rocks.
But they all use this driver. Really a beast.

The gas-powered I have is "ok" for t-posts (just remember, you've got a 6-foot tall t-post and you're putting a 2-3 foot driver ON TOP of it, not easy), but only gets 2"/2-3/8" posts about 18" in the ground before it starts to struggle. A $300 "experiment" that didn't really pan out….
