Anybody on here ever hunt up by Wellington Tx? Have not been up that far. Have a line on a little lease, as we lost our little one just north of Childress. The lessor says it's canyon country. West of Wellington. Canyonag?

Try to get some pics from the landowner, if you haven't already. Land in that area can either be red dirt "canyons" (as you get further west towards Memphis, or it CAN be heavily wooded "creek bottoms" around Quail. Lots of big deer in the Shamrock area, and the more that the land looks like that (sandy plains/shin oak/wooded "creek bottoms"), rather than "red dirt" mesquite and cedar, the more likely you are to have bigger deer.


Ask your landowner if it's mainly whitetail, or if you have a mix of whitetail/mule deer. Turkey can be really variable up there, as well. Some places will have plenty, and some will have little to no turkey. The more big cottonwoods/water you have in the immediate area, the more likely you are to have turkey. I've got land near Childress, and land north of Wheeler. Not that far apart, but like two different worlds.

Whereabouts? It's such a weird area because some areas you do have great hardwood trees to hunt, and then a mile later you're hunting canyons. If it's got a winter wheat field, the mule deer will be plum full on it.

I was told it's a little lease 160 acres west of Wellington. Said it was a canyon ranch at the end of the road next to a big ranch. Said there were 3 canyons on it so it couild handle 2 hunters. Sent a picture of a whitetail taken off of it, very nice one. Said you wouldn't want to try to take a regular truck down the canyons, need a utv or jeep.

Plan on going to look, but keep hoping Trump will wind up his spat with Iran and get diesel prices back down.

I haven't specifically hunted that area, but I've seen pictures of some very nice bucks from the eastern panhandle area.

Probably between there and Wheeler should be some pretty decent quail hunting. My dad made my 2 weeks overdue mom and my 2 year old ass when he went bird hunting down those washboard dirt roads, trying to get things moving along.

Sorrry, just saw thiss. I am not a hunter, so I am not much help. As others have said, it is mor rolling terrain, not the really deep canyons you get near the Caprock

I hunted for years just east of wheeler. Huge bodied deer. We never shot any trophies so to speak but loved hunting there.

Ok, thanks for the help. Grandsons birthday next Sunday, and he thinks it would be an awesome birthday to go look at places to hunt. Boy's got his priorities straight for 16.
