Any of you of you guys finishing out the season with some Muzzle loader hunting? Last day tomorrow. Still have 2 doe to kill. Glad for this cold front.

I guess the neighbors are duck hunting. Sounds like WW3. 50+ shots this morning.

I'm not a purist by any means. This Remington 700 muzzie is awesome.

First year in a while that I haven't done it. Freezer is full and still after ducks. I am kinda missing that puff of smoke. Good luck!

Doubt I can get a Hawken to shoot moa. If he was alive today he would be shooting one like mine

You might be surprised how accurate and repeatable they can be, but iron sights are my limiting factor on MOA or sub MOA groups.

I couldn't hit MOA with my 6 dasher on irons!

Yes sir. I'm old enough to remember when it was called "primitive firearm" season….and guys shot authentic muzzle loaders for the fun of it.
Half the fun of deer camp during the special season was admiring everyone's nicely made Kentucky or Pennsylvania rifles. Some even had flintlocks instead of percussion.
Nothing like bagging a deer with a flintlock….which I never did.
I ordered me a Thompson Center Hawkins kit and built it. Still remember the first deer I killed with it. Had my "possibles" bag, patch knife, patches made out of "pillow ticking" I cut myself. Even had a powder horn.
Killed many more after that with it as well.
Good memories.

I'm not much of a deer hunter because I do not like eating them, but I shot a pretty nice CO Mule Deer with a .58 caliber flintlock long rifle. I bought the .58 because I wanted to shoot an Elk, but we could never get tags so settled for a nice mullie. Just sits in my safe now, but I did enjoy how unique it was.

Dad started out with a TC Hawken and my first was a Lyman Plains Rifle because I liked that it looked a bit more like a real Hawken. I bought the semi-custom flintlock with money I saved from my co-op job when I was at A&M and our mullie hunt was my Dad's graduation gift to me. Great memories!

Wow! Great story and very cool! Flintlock to boot! Yes sir. Good memories sounds like.
Thank you for sharing that.

I don't know why TPWD doesn't also allow archery hunting during muzzleloader season. Call it Special Primitive Season and be done with it.

The original primitive firearm season was created due to a lot of input from members of the then, popular muzzleloader shooting groups and associations ….and also due to the increase in muzzleloader shooting/ mountain man rendezvous….. and many companies like Dixie Gun Works etc. offering some nice true traditional percussion and flintlock longarms.
The popularity of shooting muzzleloaders really peaked in the 70's - early 90's.
The original season was to give the enthusiasts of those traditional/historical firearms an opportunity to hunt WT's in a special "set aside" window.
With the advent of all the modern muzzleloaders it has morphed to just another firearm season in reality.
They ought to just extend firearm season for those days…..as the original intent has been lost, imho, with modern "muzzleloaders" of today.

I like it the way it is. But more so for the youth than the muzzleloader. Lots of bow hunters don't have muzzleloaders. But they do have kids. Had a kid get his first deer on my place yesterday. His dad is a serious bow hunter that was still trying to get his 13" buck. Instead he put his bow down, went and got his kid a crossbow, and they spent the weekend focusing on that instead of bow hunting.

Very good point. Makes really good sense looking at it that way.

How you liking the Parker Productions bullets?
What's your powder? Let's see that smoke!

I have the same weapon. I bought a bunch of Parkers but never used them for hunting. Killed a neat NM bull at 275 yards with a Barnes Original 300 grain over 4 pellets of pyrodex. Was a very cool hunt.

As an aside, I lent out that weapon to another TexAgs user for a successful hunt years back. Hasn't been fired since.

So far so good. I haven't tried anything else yet. I've killed a few deer DRT and one that ran 50. Using 777 magnum. I have been thinking about the bh209 conversion, but haven't decided.

My dad shot 2 this weekend DRT with his I set up identical to mine. Small entry wounds and devastating exits.

I have noticed a substantial velocity drop on the 777 when they aren't stored climate controlled. I try to keep them that way but temperature swings and moisture seem to rear their head no matter what. Has led me to just buy a new box every season no matter if I have left overs or not.

I haven't really messed with the gun much. Just sighted in and killing deer. I'm i have killed 1-2 deer with it every season for the past 3-4 years. I need to get it out one day and really test out different loads and bullets. What I have has worked, but I love to tinker. Doing much shooting with this thing, as you know can be a workout.

I am on my last 3 parkers so maybe it's time to play around. Would like to go away from a sabbot. Not sure if it would change much though. Just seems like there is a better way.

I killed Friday. Trying to get atleast one more doe tonight. Of course I saw 8 bucks the past 2 hunts but only doe behind trees.

My go to doe spot out of the blue had duck hunters shoot 50x yesterday and today. I have never heard bird hunters over there. They were probably only 400-500 yards from me but kept the doe south of me. Moved a little further from their lake today in hopes they aren't too spooked.

Thanks. Im in a weird doe county that only allows doe during archery, thanksgiving and muzzloader.

I rarely shoot doe during archery since I'm always after that mature buck through thanksgiving. This muzzleloader season has turned more into a spike cull. Got a 3 year old spike Friday. Always have an abundance of doe until I actually want to shoot one. I need to get this place back on MLD.

Not killing a doe during the other season paid off though. Shot a cool 13 point buck. He evaded me during archery, but I at least got to see him and figure out his patterns.

Holy cow what a great deer. I'd say it paid off for you big time. Goodness gracious that's a good buck! Congrats on that.
Understand about your weird county….but sure sounds like you are doing everything as right as possible….you should be commended for being a good steward for your land.
Thanks for posting that picture!
Have a blessed Sunday afternoon.

I'm still trying to figure out how a gun that has a bolt and loads from the breech is a muzzle loader, but these are the times we live in.

One of these days I'm going to knock the dust off of my .54 Hawken style rifle. Not today, but maybe possibly in some world one of these days. Honestly I forget about it half the time because by the time this part of the season rolls around I'm mostly burnt out on hunting and am ready for a month or so break from deer camp stuff.
Gunny456
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Know what you mean….and I got a gun or two that need some love too.
Hey. Look at it this way. Dusting off an old gun like that will bring some memories back for us….and as the years pass I look forward to that.

I'm still blown away and very envious of that buck you got.
Hope you were successful sir.

Unfortunately no. Only doe that came out had a fawn. Probably old enough to go it alone but I passed.

Damn. Well like Aggie football there is next year. I Enjoy your knowledge and post always…..and I agree with your decision to let the girl walk with her fawn.
