If you haven't made the trip to Wichita Wildlife Refuge, especially in late October through mid December (and you're relatively close), you're missing out.

It's my favorite time of year to visit the area.
Usually we get the Youth Group campsite, but it was reserved and we had to settle for the general public campsites. They are pretty decent too. Luckily the boys listened and kept the wild-ass-12-to-14-year-old behavior and noise to a minimum.
Overall a great time. The wind made my planned meal over a bed of coals a bit of a struggle, but I was prudent enough to bring our personal fire ring (instead of using their sub-par 4" tall fire rings.

It's easy to see how well the bottom vents work.

It's always my goal to make the adult meals the envy of the boys. They usually pick something super easy. This year's Saturday night meal of the adults was competing with boys' sausage on a bun.

All in all we had great weather, minus a bit of wind. The cold front held off long enough to chase us home.

We climbed and camped Guadalupe peak one spring break. Awesome trip, it snowed lightly on us and we had a great time. Enjoy those memories!

I'm glad the troop is still going there. I think the last time I went there was with the troop and your brother went too.

That's where we started rock climbing and doing shakedown hikes. Thanks for bringing up the memories!

Still going.
Parent involvement is a struggle, but that's a tale as old as scouts.
If you went with my brother, I'm betting Dad was there too.
WWR was one of his favs.

Agreed on making the boys envious of the dads meals. We do the same. Not only are our more complex, but better tasting, and usually done faster than them.

We started making the patrols make better meals, got tired of their mac and cheese. We brought in some recipes they had to pick from for supper. Then started a dutch oven dessert competitions. Boys responded well and bumped up their cooking skills.
