So
Growing up my dad did it all for our family.. work, care, go with out etc… that also included anything outdoors for my brother and me… he found us great leases to hunt, he found a spot to go for the day or weekend when we didn't have a lease, took us fishing all the time , you name it he made it work … never missed any sports etc….

My brother and I have been fortunate to take some nice bucks over the years at places my dad has taken us to or leases…. And I know my dad is super happy for us… while he has taken a couple decent bucks, he hasn't gotten " the one" he says …

He just turned 70, but the last few years he makes the comment that he sure wished he could get a trophy buck.. and in his eyes a 130-145" deer would be wonderful…. He said the other day again he feels
Like he is running out of deer seasons to make it
Happen…

He doesn't work, much so money is tight… we currently have a lease that is " free" but not a lot of deer…

I wanted to see if someone could maybe help me
With this situation…. I can't afford a lot to pay but maybe we could come up with something or
Maybe someone has or knows of a nice cull buck in that size range that my dad would consider a trophy!

It's a long shot but any help would be much appreciated… thanks! And gig em

If I still owned our ranch in Texas I could fix this easy and do it for nothing. I'm going to call the two guys I sold the ranch to in Kimble County and see if they can accommodate you somehow. Neither sell hunts but maybe they will do it. One of them has a son who just graduated from Aggieland.
With that said I will also offer you and your dad to come to our place here in the Ozarks. I will PM you.

When DVM posts his yearly come shoot a Mexican cull buck that ends up being a DAMN nice deer you might take him up on that and pool your money with your brother for it.

The "cull" deer on that Mexican ranch are the biggest deer I have ever shot! Loved seeing the deer my culls paid for DVM to shoot. Some impressive animals down there!

No help here. I'm now a visitor on the land I hunt. But you might post a budget range to narrow down options and worst case scenario you are priced out of Texas hunts these days.

Deer hunting in Texas got extremely expensive last 10 years. Ok more like 30.

Good luck helping your dad. As I start stacking up these years and miss my dad every day, I always get a little choked up when I read about a good son and good dad. Wish I could help and hope he gets himself the "one" as he obviously deserves it. Young guys, make every opportunity count with those you love, can't stress that enough.

Also, we need more Gunny's in this world. You're "good people" as my dad always said. Hope to shake your hand someday sir.

Sorry for the lecture and getting all sentimental.
I don't think you know me.

Thank you for the kind words. This thread hit me hard as 31 years ago tomorrow, Nov. 9, 1994 I buried my dad at only 72. He died of a totally unexpected heart attack on Nov. 5th. I thought I was going to have him for many more years.
We were poor as church mice growing up and hunting was a way of life for us on our little place in the hill country but dad nor I had never killed a "good buck".
We couldn't afford a lease until I got out of TAMU and I would get a lease for dad and I. They were always crappy leases as I didn't have any money to spend…and dad never got anything decent.
In 1992 I took a leap of faith and bought our ranch. (Well, me and Capital Farm Credit) It had been totally shot out by a bunch of Louisiana guys that owned it.
I knew it was going to take a while to get any good deer on it. My dream was to someday get my dad a really good buck on it. He passed before I did.
All you young'ns cherish those times while you can. And good son OP.

First off… I greatly appreciate anyone even replying to this post.. sometimes asking for help or a hand is a hard thing to do….

Secondly …. You mentioned more guys like Gunny… yes more folks like him in this world certainly couldn't hurt! Greatly guy for sure!!

I guess you don't realize when you're younger and growing up what your parents do for you and what they sacrifice and how hard they work sometimes to make little things happen . My dad grew up ranching…, running cattle and until I was 12-13 years old that's what we did… long story short, he had to start all over career wise because of $$ and an idiot that he was partners with…. To this day he is still hurt and pisssed….

But he got any job he could for a few years, mainly driving a truck and like I mentioned, never missed any sports or anything we had going on… always home at night, etc..

When I had kids I started realizing all that it takes to be a good ( hopefully) parent and how hard it is sometimes to make it all work…. I'm trying to do for my kids what my dad did for me and my brother … that why I'm trying to do this deer thing for him …

Anyway…. Again I appreciate yall for the kind words and help… God bless….

Let me know if either of those two guys I sent you to work out. I still have another couple of contacts I'm waiting for calls back. Or if it works out with DVM. Between the two of us we hopefully get your dad taken care of.
The offer still stands here at our place if needed.

OP - what part of the state do you and your father live?

I've got family land in West Central Texas, split right down the middle of Zone 1 and 2. Our deer population isn't eye popping, but I'll check with my uncle over Thanksgiving and ask if there happen to be any older deer needing to be pulled out of the field.
