So, I am facing the growing potential reality that I lost my Aggie Ring. What a kick in the nuts that is, after 20+ years. Ugh… I know yall understand my frustration.

There is a small chance it is in my yard. I have already gridded and searched as if I'm tracking drops of blood on a 200" deer. But, there are lots of leaves starting to drop, so MAYBE it's hiding in there somewhere.

I am going to borrow a metal detector from a neighbor. I'm not expecting any lessons on using it, probably just grab it from their front porch.

Any advice from you guys on how to use one? I plan on watching a video or two on YouTube as well. TIA for the advice.

Not a lot of advice needed. For an item the size of an Aggie ring presumably sitting on the surface, just walk around listening for a very loud beep.

My Aggie son found his using a metal detector however we knew within a 15' square where the ring probably was (came off while throwing football).

About 15 years ago I lost my wedding ring throwing the ball for the dog (hands were cold and it slipped off, throwing kind of backhanded with my uncoordinated left hand). I bought a metal detector, gave it a try and couldn't find it. I'm in Austin and had the local metal detecting club come out and they found that baby quick. I'd look to see if a group like that exists where you're located.

Thanks for the replies. Ends up the one I am borrow. Roofing is like a kids. Metal detector made by National Geographic. So I'm less than optimistic. But it's a big Green and should be on the surface as another poster noted, so you never know. If they doesn't work, I may try to look up middle detecting clubs. That's a really good point. Thank you guys will update.

You sound like you're drunk. It's just a ring. It'll be ok.

Years ago at spence 11:00 game start, we were finishing eating and there was a large group searching and a pretty upset girl. They were nervous to tell us where they had lost it. We got her info and Sunday came back and found 3 rings and a BBQ pit. As we were loading the pit campus police came and said we were not allowed to use a metal detector on campus. My buddy being the smartass said how else are we going to find our pit! They said people were finding jewelry and making money and it was not nice. We got the girl her ring back and my buddy took the other men's ring to the association. The other ring was a men's wedding ring with a few diamonds on the side. My buddy found the owner with identification from Riata jewelers or something like that in San Antonio. It was really cool and made us feel good to get that stuff back to owners. The pit was another story.

Since you know what you're looking for figure out how to set it for gold. Other wise you're going to get a ton of hits for random trash. If you can borrow someone else's Aggie ring put it on the ground try it with the metal detector so you know what kind of reading to look for.

This is the answer, found my SIL's Aggie ring in the yard of a house built in 1890, without eliminating all the trash signals we would have dug up the whole yard. Took less than 10 minutes to find the ring once we calibrated with my daughter's Aggie ring.

Ha ha! Gotta love voice-to-text… Someone called and I hit post before proof-reading and forgot to come back.

Either that, or I've taken up day drinking, which should REALLY help out my career!

The one I borrowed was basically a kids toy. It worked, but only had "on" and "off". Not adjustable. I tried it on some other gold, and it did register. But no profitable hits in the yard after I swept it.

That's what I figured would happen. I am 90% sure I know where it got placed, I was just trying to rule out the small chance it was in my pocket while I was playing in the yard with my kids. Sadly- what I suspect happened to it means it is gone forever now, unless a stranger happens upon it and turns it in to the Association. Stranger things have happened, but I'm not holding my breath.

I believe it was placed with a few other small items, that I later found out were moved to the rear bumper of a minivan- with the thought "We will grab these on the way back in." You already know how that turns out…

The other items were relocated to the kitchen counter. My ring was not remembered to be among them. The van was driven that evening. I have walked the roads twice, through our neighborhood and out to the highway. Went about 2 miles, scouring both ditches. I turned up bubkiss, as expected.

Involved parties shall remain unnamed, as they feel bad enough. Ultimately, it's my ring and my responsibility for not being on my finger or otherwise secure.

Surprisingly things can stay on a bumper longer than you might think. My kid once put a small chic fila drink on our Tahoe bumper and it made it 10 miles down the tollway without falling off.

Sadly, I know this to be true. And it's why I suspect the ring stayed on the bumper till the highway, and then bounced off somewhere down the road or in town where it will never be found by a Good Ag/Samaritan. If it would
have bounced off anywhere in the first mile, someone would have likely found it. We have a small neighborhood of VERY good people.

I lost my wedding ring once on a softball field when I was headed in from the outfield to take a turn hitting during a practice. I didn't realize it was missing until I was halfway home. I went back out by myself just after sunset with a maglight and searched all the areas I knew I had been. I had just given up and was turning to head back to my truck and saw a flash of light reflected off the grass from the overhead lights that were on at the next field over. Sure enough, it was my ring, halfway between the outfield and home plate.

My suggestion would be to go have somebody stand at the other end of the yard after dark with a light held up high and you walk around the other end and see if you can catch a reflection off of anything in the grass.

Negative. I know definitively when I had it last, where I set it down, and it was at my home.

I'm almost certainly sure it was moved from where I put it to the back bumper of our van, and bounced off somewhere along the road when we went into town for dinner. So, either someone spotted and grabbed it, or I'll unknowingly drive by it buried in the dirt for the next couple of decades. Short of the Lord miraculously returning it to my house, or some unbelievably Good Samaritan happening upon it- I'll have to come to grips with never seeing it again I'm afraid.

I have filed a lost ring report with The Association. I've searched the yard on hands and knees, and with a cheap metal detector. I've walked several miles of road multiple times, combing the edges and culverts. Neighbors are on the lookout as they walk. Several went out and searched their front yards pretty hard (we have several Ag's in my neighborhood). I'll try the flashlight idea mentioned above- as that's a great idea. If I can do it without getting arrested, I might even drive the neighborhood at night and shine a light on the edges. But I'm sure I'll just see 10,000 pieces of glass glinting…

Not much else I can do. To open up the kimono a little bit- I'm pretty gutted about it. I've been wearing that thing for 20+ years. A new ring is not something I can just run out and purchase, with some mounting medical bills for the fam. But, we can make a plan and squirrel away nuts and order a new one someday. That gives me time to see if the original will miraculously turn up, so… silver lining! But, right now I have to get over it, because I REALLY don't want to heap more guilt on someone than they already have on themself. I appreciate that I can vent here a little, as you guys understand.

But hey- maybe I will be one of those crazy stories where someone finds it in a pawn shop and it makes its way back to me in 20 years. Crazier things have happened!

Years ago my wife and I were cleaning out our apartment and took a bunch of trash down to the dumpster. Cold night and my Aggie ring flew into the dumpster with a load of trash. Without any hesitation I dove into the dumpster. Thankfully, found my ring.

Wife says "that ring means more to you than your wedding ring".

Again, without any hesitation or filter I responded "it was harder to get".

Yeah, we're still happily married 38 years since that event!

IT'S BAAAAACK!!!!

I asked our neighbors (on the neighborhood FB Page) to keep an eye out. We have a handful of Ag's, and a bunch of great neighbors in the hood. Quite a few people combed their front yards and kept eyes out on walks.

Well, one saint was walking her dog, and decided to spend a little extra time combing the front entrance to our neighborhood. She spotted it in the dirt under the landscaping in the center divider!!! Her parents are both Aggies in the neighborhood, so they have a true appreciation for what it means.

It was almost a mile from my house- rode the back bumper through several turns. It must have kicked off when I tuned to exit the subdivision, which had it not it would have been somewhere along the highway. Or at least not found by neighbors with enough integrity to return it! Really amazing. You better believe a gift card and giant cake is headed toward that family!!!!

I'm still in awe that I got it back at all, let alone so quickly.
