Does anyone have any basic tips for a novice calling coyotes in south texas (near Pearsall)? I have a FoxPro predator call with a bunch of different call sounds but I don't know the best call to use. Any other tips on best time of day, upwind/downwind, how to set up, whatever, would greatly be appreciated.

I've been unsuccessful at calling them in so far myself after a few tries with a foxpro, but I have found some ok videos on YouTube where they recommend which types of calls to use depending on different times of the year. I'll see if I can find said videos later.

South Texas can be good with Jay in distress. Will also bring in Bobcats well. Although Bobcats usually take 45 min or longer.
Also do not leave a set without trying pup in distress for a few minutes.

Dying rabbit was always my favorite. Brought in a huge bobcat.

I've killed piles of yotes and bobcats just south of you in Encincal with a FoxPro and shotgun (buck shot). I'd always sit on a 5-gal bucket behind some brush or cactus. It's my favorite way, as it's an adrenaline rush when one walks/runs out 10' in front of you. I mostly use jackrabbit in distress and baby cottontail. Play the wind. That's going to be your #1 nemesis. Once they smell you, you are done. Also, don't drive into the area. Park and walk a few hundred yards. Be patient. Yotes will typically come quicker than bobcats. Bobcats seem to come in slowly, which yotes will sometimes come in hard and fast within seconds of turning the call on. It's almost like they were listening to me walk in and curious. Then when I turned the call on, they were just 20-30 yards away. I would typically put the call out on pipelines and pull them in from the thick brush.
Make sure you set up so that you can see down wind. Almost the opposite of deer hunting. They like to circle down wind, and you want to make sure you can see them when they do.
I'm not sure how much land you plan on hunting, but generally if you haven't had one come in with in 30 minutes it's not happening (at least with coyotes). It's better to hunt multiple different sets than to sit in one place all morning.
If you hunt with a partner, it can be beneficial to have one guy with a long range rifle/optic setup and another guy with a shotgun or open sight rifle type set up. They will pop up 5 yards down the fenceline from you.

I like BayBee cottontail, Lightening Jack and Lucky Bird. Do not discount the challenge either. If your distress calls do not work, try the challenge calls and Platinum Fox.
My BIL once went calling with a buddy and were sitting on the ground with the call between them (not smart). Been a while since they had shined the spotlight, so sitting in pitch black on a still night with the call carrying on.
