Caught up with my Burleson County target this morning. Been watching him for two years. Deer had been hitting the feeder almost nightly. And about every third morning right at legal. Spot can only be hunted on a north wind so Ive been having to sit out a lot of days recently. Knowing he wouldnt make it past our Thanksgiving rut, my days were limited. Had my 8yo make a couple sits with me but with no luck. This morning, my dad was able to join me in the blind. Really happy to have shared it with him.
Yesterday, I stopped by mid-day to adjust feed times. This morning, we got to the blind about 45 minutes before shooting time, which proved to be critical. Not five minutes after sitting down we can hear crunching coming from the feeder. And a lot of it. A look through the scope and I can see multiple bodies in the moonlight. Thats odd! No way that's still corn left from last night. It gets to be close to legal and another scan of the scope clearly shows my deer is there. But all I can see is horns and head sticking out. Feeder is set to go off right at legal and my deer is going to get pelted in the head with a barrage of corn. Five tense minutes go by of him staying feeding with his body behind brush, and me staring at the clock. It gets to be right at legal time and right when the feeder is supposed to spin and he takes a step out. I take the shot and he runs right at us and crashes.
The feeder never does go off. Come to find out I flipped the AM/ PM setting and it had gone off at 4:30am.
Couldnt be happier with him. Back home but in a hurry to get to deer camp out on the river. Will get measurements on him later.
