With one child already at A&M in the nursing program my second child(high school senior) wants to be a pilot. He has always wanted to go to A&M and we are at the point of considering majors that are practical but can also work with flying numerous hours per week at Easterwood.

He is a good student but an engineering degree seems like a lot to take on with the flying.

His grandfather that is a retired A&M Chem E prof mentioned that Industrial Distribution might be something to consider. We like the idea of something that would give him options beyond aviation but would be manageable to get through while accumulating flight hours.

Any input would be appreciated.

ID class of '14 here. The degree has been phenomenal for my career and has led to me working for in a sales role an electrical manufacturer and then electrical distributor. Because it offers a technical background, while focusing on sales and SCM, it's allowed me to excel beyond what I ever imagined was possible.

I think it's changed from when I was there and requires more engineering courses, so there's probably a bit different of a student mix, but still a fantastic choice.

You have the option to go into many different industries, making landing a job when you graduate a higher likelihood than most majors.

Can't recommend it enough!

Graduated ID in 2012. I can't speak to the curriculum today, but it was basically 60% engineering classes and 40% business classes when I was a student.

100% job placement for grads back then. They have their own ID career fair where there were more companies attending looking to hire than there were graduating students.

Most of my friends left schools with jobs in either sales, supply chain, or oil and gas.

Two of my boys got ID degrees in'15 and '19 - both had good jobs out of college in technical sales and supply chain respectively , and both are making great money for their age group.

Both brag on Evan V and his contacts and at the time they graduated , all graduates had 100% placement. Great STEM degree with a business minor

Thanks so much to all. This is what we were looking for. Sounds like a great option.

It's a good degree. Gives you some great insight into how a really important part of our society operates. Even if he never works in distribution it's good to have an appreciation for it and I think it will serve him well. Definitely not an engineering degree but teaches some good systems thinking which is useful no matter what you do after college. It's not all blow off classes but should be very manageable even if he's busy with flying.

It has changed dramatically since the 80's but it still gives a great well rounded education. Critical thinking with engineering and creative skills with business classes.

Really can do a lot of different things with it.

class of 00 and 07 ID and MID.

It is a well rounded degree that allows someone to go into a profession that would enjoy. Sales, SCM, or operations. Data analytics is big in the program also.

I didn't major in ID, but know several that did. You will get some rib poking from engineering majors, but every single one of them is successful. Lots of options after graduation making damn good money doing some really cool stuff.

Professional engineer. Gotta have experience working under a licensed PE, pass a couple tests, and have an accredited degree. Guess ID is on the approved degree list now.
