[If you want to engage with the ideas communicated by the Pope on AI or any other subjects touched upon in this encyclical, this is your thread. The discussion can include the broader commentary surrounding the encyclical and obviously the politics surrounding the ideas expressed. The drive by posts on your general feelings about this pope or the history of the Catholic Church, that have little to do with the actual news story, are not what this thread is about. Post accordingly or face moderation. -Staff]

On my mobile so forgive me with the lack of hyperlink. Says we need strict regulations of AI all while partnering with Anthropic. From the article they want to go full 1984 and move towards having the thought police to allow what the public sees.

"Incentives cannot bend"!?

Tell me you know nothing of the history of the Papacy and the Church without telling me you know nothing of it. LOL

I'm Catholic and it's ironic that he's worried about all the AI power in the hands of a few, when he's the sole leader of the most powerful church on the planet.

I do not know what OP means by "partner," the word is mentioned zero times in the article.

It says that AI companies were hosted at the Vatican to discuss its implications on society.

I'm Catholic, but the Pope is a human, and there has been many instances of the Pope being just as corruptible as any man, of any faith.

Follow the scripture, the Gospels, there is no denying the message that comes through those! Follow the 10 Commandments, serve others over yourself!

It's easy! See you all in Heaven!

I fail to understand the intersectionality between AI and religion, and where that intersectionality falls under church doctrine- insofar as the Pope needs to take an official position on the companies developing said technology.

There's still billions of people that need saving, AI or not, seems like that should be the focus.

AI has become heavily integrated into our lives...studies have shown humans who regularly rely on AI lose certain function in their brain because they become so reliant on the technology they basically allow it to think for them. You have to think about the fact this is going to impact kids that are exposed to it from a younger age and what that does to us as a society. Then we have execs at some of these companies that talk about having AI chips in our brains or harnessing our own minds and storing them on a computer chip.

The rapid advancements of AI certainly warrant theological review and I would rather a religious leader weighing some of those impacts than just blindly trusting Sam Altman and his vision for our future.

Your premise is "but for the pope, we'd all be blindly following Sam Altman." I agree there are risks associated with the use of AI, just like just about anything else, but my point still stands.

The Altman comment was hyperbole and that was not the premise I intended to convey.

I think my stance and the Church's stance would be that nearly every aspect of our lives interplays with our faith and relationship with God, so it makes sense for the Church to comment on matters such as these.
