The City of McKinney has filed a lawsuit in Travis County that effectively sues its own residents, asking a court over 200 miles away to shut down citizen challenges to controversial airportexpansion bonds.

McKinney voters have twice rejected propertytaxbacked airport expansion bonds: a $50 million bond in 2015 and a $200 million bond in 2023. Rather than dropping the project, city officials moved to "other city funding sources."

In 2025, the city requested and received $5.4 million in grants for the airport project from the McKinney Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC). Both are financed by a dedicated 0.5 percent local sales tax.

McKinney's actions assumed voters only rejected the project because they didn't want to pay for it through general obligation bonds, but would support paying for it through sales tax revenue bonds.

Can someone please explain this to my like I'm five because my initial thought is WTF?

Getting commercial service to TKI must be someone's pet project. Constituents be damned. Besides, what kind of service do they honestly think they'll get to come there?

It kind of reminds me of Ed Emmett's Astrodome obsession.

"The statute was written by bond issuers to stomp on taxpayers and defies every semblance of due process."

You can bet the bond counsel, underwriters, architectural design firms, and contractors don't mind this at all.

I live in McKinney and this has me pretty damn heated. Absolute proof, again, that those with money can simply run roughshod over the people they are meant to lead. Honestly, pretty glad I don't plan on staying here long term anymore.

America, The "Free"...

More and more of just a concept it feels like these days.

My parents bought a house (unknown at the time) that is in the flight path of the new airport and is about 1.5 miles away. We made sure to sell it last year as quickly as possible just to get away from all this. People do not want this but the city does as a massive money making machine.

My mom has friends that sold their multi acre farm for low 8 figures. Going to be converted to a warehouse for aviation equipment. Big money already moving into the area.

Supposed to be a third airport to match love field. Plenty of people would avoid going to near downtown or DFW. Also rapid rise of Sherman/denison and that corridor I'd imagine.

Why not develop Perrin Field in Sherman? It's the same acreage as Love Field and eventually will be on the North Dallas toll road. It seems like a more logical choice as the Metroplex is growing that direction.

It seems like there should be some accountability assigned to the public, who voted these people into office?

When elected officials are doing something wrong, I tend to wonder why people are voting them into office.

If they were voted in, and then the elected officials surprised the public with their decisions I would hope recalls or other options are available for the public to remove the elected officials from office.

Why Travis County as the venue? That feels like judge shopping but is there a legit reason that's better than they expect a judge from a blue county to side with the government over the governed?

Just have them call the CSID School board. They know how to get a bond issue passed (even if it fails time and time again).

If that's all they wanted, they can do that right now in the current airport (It's actually really nice). There's more grift involved here.

Its a sham proceeding. Travis County is a POSSIBLE venue under the government code, but so is Collin County.

I don't believe this will get past the Court of Appeals even if an Austin judge accepts it on the short notice the plaintiffs are seeking (another sham). Technically, the AG is the defendant -- or at least, the Travis County court portal lists the AG as the defendant. Everyone else was served by publication less than 3 weeks before a supposed trial date. If that isn't a miscarriage of justice, I don't know what is.

Hell, you can't even get most eviction hearings that fast. At least not through the appeal stage.

Need to see who would ACTUALLY get the money here ; the only reason to push so hard against the will of the people is for a cash grab but someone in the shadows (politicians, friends, family, etc)

Even though I strongly disagree with it, I can at least get the idea of bonds for something like a new stadium because of cultural and revenue benefits that help this entire area.

This is a regional airport for rich people pushing their costs to the people, being rejected.

A reminder to vote in local elections I can piss off my city council member or county chair much easier than I can Abbott or Trump.

According to the article, Paxton and the AG's office is fighting this. It will be interesting to see how vigorously they fight since Paxton is a one of the power brokers in Collin County.
