Finally a city council with balls denies a mosque and "islamic education center" being built on 15 acres in Broken Bow. They denied it based on the lack of infrastructure and said the area would not be able to handle it for at least 10 years. Wish it was more of a firm no but they found a way unlike Abbott who is allowing places that don't follow American laws like EPIC and Colony Ridge. Paxton is doing some work but feels like it is mostly for show.

Broken Bow city council denies mosque 4-1

Quote:

After the meeting, Mayor Debra Wimpee doubled down to local media that her vote to deny the rezoning was based strictly on a lack of sufficient infrastructure on Olive Avenue for the influx of weekly traffic to a mosque.
"I was really upset that a lot of people brought it about religion and that's not what that vote was for, in my opinion," Mayor Wimpee told 2 News. "(The planning commission's) job is kind of different than (the council) in the way that they looked at it clearly as, 'It is legal to be able to change it to commercial.' Like, they have that ability to change it. And it was a split vote when it came to the special use (permitting), which I didn't necessarily agree with them splitting the vote because it was a one agenda item and it should have remained a one agenda item. But that's their role. They get too make those decisions. They felt that...it was an OK vote for the sequential use and four people thought it was OK to change it to commercial."
"My message is that (our vote) had nothing to do with the place of assembly," Mayor Wimpee added. "(The land) wasn't even prepared for commercial use, much less adding commercial use and a place of assembly. There is not infrastructure in place to be able to do that. I'm talking about the road right in front that is not prepared, and it won't be in at least ten years.

Broken Arrow; not Broken Bow. Unless they are one and the same.

My issue really isn't with the building of mosques or "Islamic centers". They are going to gather somewhere one way or the other. At least we know where they are which should make monitoring them easier. This seems like a waste of time.

My issue is with letting any more in the US period. We shouldn't be allowing them to come here in the first place.

My grandmother was from Broken Bow. That town is tiny. Like tiny, tiny. I can't figure out how there would be a large enough population to warrant a new mosque.

But I get the lack of infrastructure. It's an old run-down town and a sudden influx of people will cause a lot of stress on the city.

Broken Arrow is a large suburb of Tulsa. Broken Bow is a mountainous resort town at the southeast corner at the foot of the Ouachita Mountains.

This happened in Broken Arrow.

Ironically, I have one customer in Broken Arrow and he is muslim.

They are not. Broken Arrow is 100,000+ people in the northern part of the state and broken bow is less than 10,000 on the SE corner.

Broken Arrow makes WAY more sense than Broken Bow.

Not really. It's a pretty significant weekend vacation spot for North Texans. We've been there a few times. Hundreds of high end cabins all over that place to rent.

Conversely, Broken Arrow is a suburb of Tulsa. This is about Broken Arrow in Tulsa.

Beat me to it. Love me some Enterprise, but highly disappointed in the way the series was concluded. Absolute travesty. To make it thread related, I would prefer having Klingon neighbors. But I do like wearing my "women, life, freedom" shirt (in Farsi) on Fridays. Some Muslims who just got out of the mosque gave me **** about it. The Sunnis hate that the Persians are trying to free themselves from Islamic oppression.

Never seen Wild Wild Country, have ya

Also I wouldn't call Broken Bow "run down", or even "tiny tiny"

Hell half of Collin County empties out and heads there on summer weekends. Pretty country, nice lake, great rainbow trout fishing

We always have a good time in Hochatown

Fair enough, my grandma died 20 years ago, so I'm admittedly dealing with old information.

The linked article clearly says Broken Arrow.

I was definitely scratching my head about Broken Bow needing infrastructure to handle it. Only infrastructure they'd need there is a parking lot.

Grateful Head pizza north of Broken Bow… great pizza imo.

Also completely unrelated, I fished a Bassmasters Top 100 tournament in Gadsden, Alabama and my final day partner was Charlie Reed who had won the 1986 Bassmasters Classic. Nice guy. He was from Broken Bow. Though I had been bass fishing for around 35 years by then, 8 hours in a boat with him was an education.

Video of the crowd. Very big crowd.

Maybe I'm just stereotyping here, but I'm thinking vast majority of the crowd was opposed to the Mosque. you know, because of the strain on infrastructure.

Same thing with the Mormon temple in Dallas in the early 1980s. Awful, awful thing to have a Mormon temple in a city.

Can confirm that De Queen is dry. I don't drink a lot but every now and then, I'd have an urge to stop and grab a six pack after work. But then I remembered that was an hour round trip out of the way...

Small world. 20 years ago, I had to go up to Broken Bow to help deal with someone that lived there that passed on. Haven't been back since then.

Did a search, and I mentioned Broken Bow on this site in 2004 and 2005.

I'm glad to hear that it's a nice area now. 20 plus years ago, all I saw was ghetto poverty. I still remember the Wal Mart, and everything cold medicine related locked up behind plexiglass, and the cashier using the marker to check my cash for being counterfeit - not 100s or 20s - but for 1s. Yes, 1 dollar bills.

Lol, yeah, I know. Thankfully, I've not been warned to not step foot in Sevier County. Unfortunately, I didn't meet any good looking dark haired daughters of Southwest Arkansas.
