But, seriously, I'd be interested in what the military and lawyer folks in here think.

Not sure how a gray plane vs a white plane makes much of a difference and can the guys on the boat even tell the difference given the altitude?

I can see everyone is having a good time with this, but this is a major reason that enemy combatants in Iraq/Afghanistan sometimes didn't have Geneva convention protections isn't it? Because they didn't wear uniforms or identify themselves as soldiers?

Doubtless, this is not the first time that the US has used clandestine force in a military operation, but generally it's been disavowed because it does violate the "laws of war." Of course, violating the laws of war has risks and benefits, and sometimes the benefits outweigh the risks (especially consider that enforcement of these laws is pretty uneven.)

The dudes on the boat probably never saw nor heard any plane whether it was a caravan, f18, f35, or af1 itself. Nyt is dumb.

Enemies are foreign and domestic.

The Domestic enemy will absolutely use this any way they can and it has nothing to do with what is right or wrong. All Politics.

Some inconsistency in the terms used here. One claims Pentagon (military) and one claims U. S.(not necessarily military). Perhaps the CIA conducted the strike using their covert aircraft. Not unheard of see Air America.

International law requires words and someone to back them up. It's always been the US. Coalition of the willing? As long as the US says it's ok. UN Peacekeeping force? Intelligence & logisitics US. The entire world's oceans were underwritten by a never before seen naval force paid for by the treasure, blood, sweat and tears of the US. The world has always worked in terms of might is right. Trump is just ripping off the veil that's been draped over it that had everyone thinking in terms of collective altruism, shared international norms, universal expectations. The leaches have bled us dry for a very long time and now he's just doing things in the plain english version of realpolitik.

I have seen one argument that kinda makes sense about this. If the US military disguises itself as civilians in conflict, then the adversary can attack US citizens under the assumption that they could be military in disguise.

They'd attack civilians regardless so it's a moot point, but interesting to think about.

There is risk in this type of behavior on both sides of the equation which is why we generally don't do that I believe.

However, I don't think it applies in this story which I think is BS. There is no reason for the US to disguise their aircraft in this manner against drug boats that already know we are hunting them with aircraft. They are going to be suspicious of ANY aircraft whether it is ours or not. Besides, odds or, if they are close enough to actually see one of our planes, they are already dead anyway so who are they going to tell what our planes looked like? This whole story is just stupid.
The best way to keep evil men from wielding great power is to not create great power in the first place.

In Europe: Left wing, right wing...same bird.

The (D) strategy is legal opposition to EVERY (R) action. There are a dozen questions that could defeat this assertion, but the point is to add red tape. Any tenuous foothold can be used by their black robed activists. The lawfare is the point. Until (R) start impeaching and removing justices, the layers of tape will continue to build.
