A report encouraged the head coach of the Jaguars after the game, all of sports media Twitter is pissed at her.

But when they bring politics into it by asking NBA head coaches about an ice shooting, the same media is silent.

People hate politics in sports. It's why Pat is winning the media game as a retired punter.

Ha I'd love to spend Thanksgiving with that woman and her family. Southern women in general are just so much more pleasant in every regard than the crotchety yankee liberals we constantly have to hear complaining and throwing stupid tantrums.

This. If anything, she probably just made them look better as a group...people may have a more favorable opinion of journalists after that exchange. It was actually kind of touching.

I saw this earlier and there was nothing but love for the reporter. And why? Because she was just being freaking nice to the guy, who by the way his entire facial expression changed while she was talking to him, could really use some kindness being sent his way.

The point about how there is a cancer of "sports journalists" that are actually just flunky journalists that really wanted to do politics is so valid. When I see all these reporters that are little 5'7 150lb dorks that clearly never played sports other than not making any teams in High School get treated as experts that we need to care about their opinions it is beyond annoying. Then of course they can't wait to jump into politics and social justice at every opportunity. I'm looking at you Tony Kornheiser and Colin Cowherd and Mike Greenberg as well as pretty much every female sports journalist that isn't eye candy or a former athlete.

I don't take any of them seriously but it is annoying as hell how much time and space they take up.

Modern twitter is increasingly becoming "real life". There 100% are people in the admin who monitor it and take the temp of responses to things floated and use that info to act accordingly. Certainly a lot of the site is bots and trolls and paid dissidents etc, but it 100% has some non negligible effect on the real world.

I used to say regularly exactly what you said, but my time has changed over the last couple of years.

I wasn't a Pat McAfee fan before seeing him at Kyle Field for Midnight Yell a few weeks ago prior to the Miami game.

But... watching him over the past month, I've got massive respect for his hustle. That guy works harder than probably anybody else in sports media.

Kirk Herbstreit seems to be working pretty hard too but McAfee's energy and drive is unmatched.

Yep. Look at the staff pages of most metropolitan newspapers. In all the staffing cuts, the one area that has seen the least reduction is the sports pages. The leftists have ruined the other parts of the paper, and the sports section is what keeps any revenue coming in. So now they are ruining that section too, because that's where the spots are.

Soon, they will be politicizing the obituary pages.

I figured she was a local reporter.

But F her right for praising the coach of the home team. He only took a 3-14 team from 2024 to a 14-3 in one season, as his first season at HC. And unfortunately had to open the playoffs against Josh Allen and still took it down to the wire (great game by the way).

Yeah, local reporter should have just asked him a lot of uncomfortable questions leading back to what everyone already knows which is that Allen is nearly unstoppable when he has his game on.

Sports media sucks. I consume very little of it.

I thought it was a fantastic moment by that reporter telling him that in a moment where the last thing he probably wanted to do was be in that room answering questions about why he and the team failed.

Sports reporters are very concerned to not look beholden to the teams they cover. They aren't, and shouldn't be, on the same team. It's similar to the no cheering in the press box rule. It's pretty much a basic rule.

Asking coaches about politics is idiotic, but a different kind of bad.

Right. She is obviously a local reporter and a fan of the team.

The reporter took an opportunity to be positive and tell the coach what the entire city wanted to say. You could see the change in his expression. How dare she do that!

I will admit that this world is making less and less sense to me every day.

I didn't say it is becoming my real life, you simply assumed that. Incorrectly, I might add. It is, in fact, having an effect on what happens in the real world. Again, as I mentioned, the administration has absolutely responded to reactions on twitter from their digital base. Additionally, plenty of people who treat social media as their reality are doing the things they are encouraged to do, such as all of these ice protestors and the like. Only a fool would say that what happens online exclusively stays online in this day and age.

Jemele Hill is still relevant? I didn't realize she even has a job right now (I guess she does if you consider a contributing reporter for The Atlantic a job). Maybe there are other journalists that are criticizing this reporter, but I haven't seen it in my sports-heavy X feed.
Honestly, this seems like some ragebait from Pat, and maybe he has a personal beef with Hill. If he does, that's fine, and she should be called out for it. But to act like all of left-wing sports media is poo-pooing this reporter's statement is a little much.

I don't understand the complaint here. If McAfee wants to toss blame, throw it at Rivers and Kerr....those are the guys who made the stupid comments.

A beat writer has to endure 82 games (or more) per season, with press conferences filled with the same old questions that must numb the brain. They know coaches like Rivers and Kerr can't resist answering questions about events like this, and there is a good chance their comments will be newsworthy. You can't fault them for asking.

Also, it is not a good look for McAfee to criticize reporters who make a tiny fraction of what he makes to sit and opine all day. If McAfee wants to show some real "courage", openly attack Rivers and Kerr for being misinformed and stupid.

Twitter is not real life, Go look at Elon's stats on who follows most of these crazies. Its all bots

But yes, what happens online does spill out to reality because some can't distinguish the two sadly!

I like McAfee most days, but he doesn't know what he's talking about here. Most sports reporting jobs barely pay a livable wage. There are too many sports fans who want to work in the industry. And, sure, a lot of them aren't former pro athletes, but almost all of them are former athletes on some level, and many still rec league heroes or golf course fixtures in their off time.

What McAfee doesn't know is that the sports department was considered the "toy department" in most news organizations for a long time (and by "news organizations" I mean newspapers, because there weren't many other places to ply the trade). Teams gave reporters a lot of perks; reporters gave teams favorable coverage. It took a lot of work and time for sports reporting to become independent of the teams it covered and become a more serious part of the newsroom. Because of that, sports reporters are very protective of the independent image, and they don't want their peers looking to be lackeys.

I have said repeatedly that sports "journalists" are much farther left on average than normal "journalists," and that says a lot.

They have mortally wounded ESPN with their rabid political takes over the years, and people like Bob Costas and that clown at WFAA have continually interjected politics into what is supposed to be a mindless relaxing pastime for Americans. Same people egged on the NFL kneeling and posturing.
