The Court will supposedly be releasing one or more opinions today at 10AM eastern time.

The two that have drawn the most speculation are

Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump- Whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act authorizes the president to impose tariffs.

Louisiana v. Callais- Whether Louisiana's intentional creation of a second majority-minority congressional district violates the 14th or 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

If there is more than one opinion, it will be released soon after the preceding one and after any justice finishes reading from the opinion or his/her concurrence or dissent.

They are also released in reverse seniority with the Chief Justice always being the most "senior" regardless of time on the Court. So if Jackson has the first opinion, then the next one can come from any Justice. If the first opinion is by Alito, it means the next opinion would be either by Alito again, Thomas or the Chief.

So, here we go for the first time in 2026, and rather early at that.

And I'm going to add, please lets keep this thread civil and discuss the rules/merits of each case. There is enough sniping going on lately on numerous other threads.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Is the LA case the one that may eliminate the VRA?

Severely weaken it, but yes.

I would be fairly surprised if Callais is decided, I think it's the tariff case.

The tariff case could potentially change the whole way President Trump enacts foreign policy. Big, big case for him.

Woah. How rare is this type of expedited publication?

I believe they promised expedited ruling on both these.

VRA case affects the 2026 elections.

The tariffs case will be hell to unwind if it goes against the government. Sooner it's settled, the better for all involved.

And the only opinion is Bowe v. United States
Rapier108

First and only today is Bowe v. United States.

5-4 by Justice Sotomayor

Gorsuch, Thomas, Barrett, and Alito dissent.

Quote:

Whether 28 U.S.C. 2244(b)(1) applies to a claim presented in a second or successive motion to vacate under 28 U.S.C. 2255; and (2) whether Subsection 2244(b)(3)(E) deprives this court of certiorari jurisdiction over the grant or denial of an authorization by a court of appeals to file a second or successive motion to vacate under Section 2255.

This is a case about a federal prisoner's efforts to obtain post-conviction relief from a mandatory consecutive 10-year sentence imposed under a federal law.

The court holds that a federal law that instructs courts to dismiss a claim presented in a second or successive habeas corpus application ... that was presented in a prior appplication" does not apply to motions filed by federal prisoners.

Talk about a major letdown.

"Very technical" undersells just how technical this opinion is

Well, nothing earth shattering today.

I'll do another thread whenever the Court announces their next opinion day.

Pretty easy to say whichever way Thomas votes is the correct answer so this is a bad decision.

If you mean when it will be released, none. Could be next week, could be a month or more.

If you mean how they might rule, it seems likely that Trump will lose based on the questions from the justices during oral arguments. That said, there is no way to know for certain. They could rule in Trump's favor, nuke the tariffs completely, or find a way to split the baby. The Court is famous for being full of surprises.

If tariffs are struck down, IMO it will be a major hit against the return of manufacturing and the long term future of the US economy. Addiction to cheap foreign goods is strong. Also corporations don't care about returning manufacturing to the USA, even critical needs. The love of money is destroying the USA, and thus the world.

Yes, we need tariffs. Manufacturing is returning and will take time to undo the damage of past decades.

Since today's release is equivalent to sad trombone, can we transition to the future cases?

Given that the Dobbs decision was leaked to try and either influence someone to change their vote, or at the very least, give the protestors time to get their signs printed, get messaging out, etc, am I crazy to think that if the VRA case is going to go against the dems, it will likely be leaked as well? Those two cases stand to essentially gore two of the dems' most sacred cows - abortion and the race card.
