Vietnam is reportedly limiting unskippable ads on YouTube and other online platforms to five seconds. That means any video ads or ads with moving images will have to be made skippable after five seconds. Vietnam News reports that these new rules go into effect in the country starting February 15. Moreover, the new regulation also prohibits platforms from forcing people to wait before closing static ads.

Vietnam is working on making it law how long unskipable and forced advertisement/interruptions can be. I am in favor of this completely. Amazon/Twitch and Google/YouTube are notorious for forcing long, unskipable interruptions into live streaming content which ruins the entire point of watching live content. They need to fix their model soon or be heavily fined in Vietnam and hopefully more places. This new law would also outlaw banners/popups that do not allow immediate closure on websites. No more hiding the X for 10 seconds or disabling it all together to force people to view it.

LMAO

Pissed about "having" to watch unskippable ads? Turn off the ****ing iPhone.

Despite what some think, folks are not FORCED to watch these things.

Now, if they force TV ads during football games to be only 5 seconds, I'd be all for that.

There is a way to do this, and some networks do it already. Kill the audio to the live event and do a split screen for the ads. Golf and racing events do it quite often.

Wait.
Aren't you for "free markets"? Isn't your argument going to be "If you hate it, then go find another vendor!"?

You want more government?????

heh.

Totally in favor, but the teams would never allow it to happen. They're not giving up those free timeouts.

And probably just means more ads.

Can you imagine a series of 5 second ads for 3 full minutes?

Maybe a "watch what you ask for" moment.

On second thought, maybe just let the markets decide what pain can be inflicted on the general public.

When the platforms in question have essentially legal monopolies now and have for years, regulation is the only way to rein in anti-consumer practices. Anything that tries to start up in this market now is drowned by them immediately. They throw sponsorship money around like the NIL is doing now and immediately poach anyone worth watching onto their platform. No startups can survive in this market.

I would assume that it would be carved out in the law that any live programming that stops for said ad break would be exempt. Now if the game continued while the ads played out, they would definitely fall foul of this. As stated above by another poster, split screen ads have already solved this in a consumer friendly way in multiple major sports.

I am just getting more PISSED because I have paid for premium type subscriptions in the past specifically to avoid ads, yet years later they are somehow sneaking into those services. I am sure they changed the terms of service in fine print somewhere over time but that is some bull**** in my opinion. They should stick to their initial terms if I have kept current on my payments.

Ill assume Vietnam isnt a big enough player to force global change. I could foresee the platforms simply dropping Vietnam before ceding ad revenue streams

I will happily pay money not to have my kids bombarded by ads or my personal details tracked. This is *exactly* the sort of thing we have government for.

Then again, I was the only person to stand and boo when they introduced commercials/ads before movie previews.

If the ad is only five seconds, I'll likely just put up with it and actually watch the ad. Anything longer, I'll do what I need to avoid the ads entirely. Either ad blockers or a different service/platform.

I have two apps, Adblock and Adblock Pro. No ads on YouTube or anywhere else. You people watching ads, the amount of time you spend watching one ad could be spent downloading an ad blocker.

YouTube has been playing a game of cat and mouse with adblockers for years. Though against the user agreement, they never have done an outright ban despite threats.

Lately I have noticed less issues with my adblockers, but some features seem to have disappeared. I can't change the playback speed for slow motion for fast-forward, and I can't get a preview by pointing my mouse cursor to the timeline at the bottom. These are either now premium options or disabled if you use an adblocker.

To me it seems clear they don't want to lose the audience of people using adblockers. That says they are still collecting enough data on users to sell.

I am with you my friend.

I am not one of those "Less Government Always Better" types. In some cases, we need the Govt, some we don't.

More than you, I was actually addressing those brainwashed "conservatives" who want to expose us all to the mercy of corporations because they hate the government so much.

I'm happy to compensate youtube $13/mo to go ad free, plus get their music service.

You either pay or get ads. That's the deal. Youtube is a business.

Some services now have ads even for the paid service tiers.

It's like cable now.

You pay the cable company, and they still serve you adds, although I guess the model is a little different as the advertisers pay the networks, not the cable company directly as is the case with more recent services.

idk about letting ****bags in congress or bureaucrats create more regs for a service you can just ignore if you don't like it.

But i wouldn't mind having regulatory controls over sensory overload from ads being blasted on my devices (eg audio volume), or requiring intentionally elaborate, frustrating methods to dismiss them.

I can't stand SaaS fees, but $8 a month for Youtube Premium and Music is well worth the price.

That said, I run ad blockers everywhere. Trying to do anything on the internet without one is miserable. I don't understand how the masses do it.

Monopoly? I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I'm disgusted by the anti vax conservatives that can't wait for daddy to govern them harder because they don't want to pay to avoid ads or cant just turn their device off or not use a service they don't like.

The irony of too many ads to consumers as being described as "anti-consumer".
The best way to keep evil men from wielding great power is to not create great power in the first place.

I think a reasonable policy is not to allow the ads to be longer than the actual video.

Hey, at least you're not a bomb squad technician.
