Maybe this has been discussed, but why would we give them 40 billion? What is in it for us?

No facts , my guess people don't like this because the President of Argentina isn't a left wing loon

Because we didn't give them $40 billion, we agreed to exchange currency for their pesos.

And this fits securing our side of the globe against Chinese expansion of influence into Brazil.

So OP has the facts wrong ? You don't say

Let's interject some facts missing from the OP. This is not "aid" or in any way "giving" Argentina $20 billion. The initial $20 billion is a a credit swap facility designed to stabilize the Argentine peso.

The additional $20 billion would be provided by private banks and sovereign funds (not US, but I need to confirm). And it's likely contingent on there continuing to be a stable, capitalist democracy being in control of the Argentinian government. That's a good thing.

But if one just googles, you get a variety of Newsweek, The Hill and… wait for it… PBS articles saying Trump wants to double US assistance to Argentina to $40 billion with no mention of the details. Just "Orange Man wants to Give Argentine Man $40 billion to be best friend".

I care. Considering only about 30% of us paying any real taxes. That's maybe 60 million adults.

That's $666 per person. It's evil.

Buying their pesos is not giving them anything.

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I don't think we have them $40bb. We bought $40bb of their currency to prop them up.

Maybe they devalue the currency and this becomes worthless

Maybe this gets them moving and turns out to be a good investment

Mostly it was to help the current prime minister avoid a physical crisis

It will cost us the difference in inflation of the peso and the dollar when we change it back.

If the $ inflates more than the peso, we will actually make money on the deal.

This is like buying a giant house in Argentina. If the price of the house goes up, we make money. If the price of the house goes down, we lose the amount of money that the house price went down.

The peso is most likely to lose value to the $ over time, but it won't just go away.

I mean, if they go tits sideways then maybe. Though Trump typically hedges his bets. They default and we can have free Mendoza wine and beef.

Sorry, no Trump gotchya. Keep trying though.

We bought a crappy asset that loses value over time and we won't ever be able to cash out. In exchange Argentina is stable a little longer

I don't know why you think it's fake outrage. I think the entitlement spending is bull**** too.

People on here have the most dumb ass responses. Because I have an issue with discretionary spending you think I'm OK with non-discretionary? What part of your ****ing brain came up with that?

Just to clarify, this is not spending.

This is allocating some balance sheet then doubling with PRIVATE financing.

This one isn't paying attention to this thread or the other one. It won't matter how you refute what they say, they will stick to their talking points no matter how dumb. Where did their 30.47 Bn USAID budget amount come from?

Interesting. Then you should have no worry about them making good use of this financial stability to continue their economic reforms and recovery.

It is a great country with many great qualities. The problem is that liberalism and their socialist ideals took over for a long long time. It destroyed their economy, let to rampant inflation and out of control government spending.

It's why Trump is working so hard to help them cause he understands the same thing was happening here u til he saved us.

Thank god for Trump. Are you not glad he is helping a country you seem to like?

I just dont understand how buying their useless pesos helps them long term. The money could be used to help farmers or keep federal employees. Or, just maybe, we don't spend it at all. I know. a foreign concept to todays conservatives.
