I am suspecting this won't go over well with the Italian people:

This is by left-wing Italian communists, as evidenced by the hammer and sickle.

Any issues in Palestine are irrelevant when it comes to revolutionaries and their hatred of the papacy and historical Christianity in Europe (going back several centuries).

Multiple popes have urged Palestinian statehood, so doubt this was done by Palestinians.

Probably ProPalestinians. The cause of the Palestinian state emerging and erasing Israel is now a hard doctrine of the left. This story appeared this morning in the Washington Post about the radicals taking over the Democratic Socialists of America and their anti-white/anti-Israel policies:

I also started a thread in F16 on that article if you want excerpts.

Say what you want about the "extremes" at both sides but:

The illiberal left attacks the church and the family
The illiberal right attacks the illiberal left

I know which side I'm on

Historian Bernard Lewis points out that modern Arab antisemitism was introduced into the Middle East primarily by Arab Christians (importing it from European Christians) whose focus was frequently nascent nationalism. And of course, blood libel has been part of both European and Arab antisemitism.

I don't think that has anything to do with the statue vandalism above. The statue vandalism has to do with Italian political rivalries dating back 100 years between the fascists and anti-fascists.

I would have a hard time characterizing the Italian communists and Left as anti-semitic since Jews have historically played such an outsized role in those movements.

They are, however, very anti-Catholic and anti-Pope. They hate 'organized religion' and traditional European society and culture.

To put it succinctly, the leftists vandalized the statue of the pope:
  • Not because they love the Pope but he suddenly came out as anti-Palestinian
  • But because they hate the Pope in spite of him being pro-Palestinian

I would partially agree. Anti-Zionism, however IS a focus of the modern political left: not just the existence of a Palestinian state but rather that Palestinian state supplanting the modern Jewish state with the caveat that Israeli Jews can live with that fact or leave.
I fail to see the qualitative difference in that and outright antisemitism.

Only in America, and again only because of the preponderance of Evangelicals that make up the Christian right and their weird fetish with Israel.

You presume a lot. My study of Zionism actually predates my study of eschatology.

I have zero doubt of that
