There are 5 schools that play FBS football that do NOT have the word "University" in their official name.

Who are they?

Military academies. Army, navy, airforce. Still thinking on two more..

Boston College, Army-West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech)

That's all I got off the top of my head. Guessing the rest are G6 schools.

I graduated from there. Official name is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

It's the "United States Military Academy", not "Army" or "West Point"

Division 1, so can include FCS. I think you meant FBS schools, not D1.

People have been using monikers, epithets and shortened names for forever.

Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Medieval Europe, yep they all used something shorter or descriptive to mean something else.

It doesn't reduce the importance of the official name when a nickname is used.
